Which Yoga Certification is the Best to become a Teacher?
Creating inner peace through yoga and maintaining a healthy mental and physical body leads us to a more successful, balanced and joyful life. Why not turn this holistic practice into a career and share your passion with others?
To become a yoga teacher, you have to complete an apprenticeship, also known as yoga teacher training, through which you learn all of the theoretical and practical aspects of yoga. Of course, you have to learn and practise to become a teacher, right?
But which certification is required to become a registered teacher? There are a few options, so lets discuss which yoga certification is best to become a yoga teacher.
You can, for instance, complete a yoga teacher training in India with a registered yoga alliance approved school. Or you can complete a yoga teacher training with a non-registered school.
The difference is that you will receive a yoga alliance certification after choosing a Yoga Alliance approved school. This opens many doors for you. After successfully completing a RYS-200 Yoga Teacher Training, you can register yourself on the yoga alliance website as Registered (RYT-200) Yoga Teacher.
Especially, if you plan to teach yoga internationally, travel and open your own yoga studio, this certification is of great importance.
It’s more unlikely that you will be accepted in yoga teaching positions without a yoga alliance certification.
If you plan to study yoga more in-depth over a larger period of time, you can consider doing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in yogic science, pranayama or Ayurveda.
These degrees cover a lot of practice and theory and give you a license to teach afterwards as well.
The only negative about this is, that it takes 4-5 years, which makes it a lot more expensive and more difficult to manage.
So here are your options:
- 1. Complete a yoga teacher training in India with a non-registered school and receive a certificate without yoga alliance logo
- 2. Join a yoga teacher training in India with a registered school and receive a yoga alliance certification
- 3. Take up a university course in India and get your BA of Yogic Science/MA Yogic Science
If you want to become a yoga teacher, dive into an intensive practise and gain a lot of knowledge within a short period of time, you should join a yoga alliance registered yoga teacher training that covers either 200 or 500 hours in total.
200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training
A Yoga Alliance registered 200 hour yoga teacher training covers at least 5 hours asana and 5 hours theory or pranayama/meditation per day. It usually takes 25 to 31 days and includes a lot of interesting modules like teaching practice, Ayurveda, philosophy and anatomy. After such 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, you will be certified and can register as RYT-200. That’s it.
300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training
A 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training can be completed once you graduated from your 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training. You can either do both courses straight after each other (500 Hours in total) or you can wait a little in between, gain some teaching experience and learn more later. After completing a yoga alliance registered 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, you can register as RYT-500.
So now it’s up to you, which way you prefer!
